Abstract

This study aims to systematically synthesize empirical evidence on the role of Islamic financial literacy in saving decisions at Islamic banks, identify the mediating and moderating mechanisms that strengthen this relationship, and formulate a future research agenda in the context of the digital transformation of Islamic banking. This research employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Literature searches were conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and nationally accredited journal databases for the period 2010–2025. A total of 257 articles were identified, and after screening and quality assessment, 48 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed thematically. The synthesis results indicate that Islamic financial literacy consistently has a positive and significant effect on saving decisions in Islamic banks across various contexts and respondent segments. This effect is mediated by trust and strengthened by religiosity as a moderating variable. Emerging findings reveal that digital literacy, Islamic financial inclusion, and halal lifestyle are playing increasingly important roles, especially among Generation Z and millennials. However, research gaps remain regarding standardized measurements of Islamic financial literacy, longitudinal studies, and exploration of the role of Islamic financial technology (fintech) and artificial intelligence (AI). These findings imply the need for segmented Islamic financial literacy programs, integrated with strengthening trust and spiritual values, and supported by an educational digital ecosystem. Islamic banks, regulators, and educational institutions need to collaborate in designing holistic and sustainable interventions. This research contributes by presenting a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis (2010–2025) that maps not only the direct influence of Islamic financial literacy but also the mediating and moderating mechanisms, as well as identifying future research directions in the digital era, which has been rarely undertaken in previous literature.
